Children’s Music Classes

Kathryn Brunner, a licensed and certified Musikgarten instructor, teaches Musikgarten’s internationally renowned curriculum, bringing music classes to you in your home, on your schedule, with easy-to-follow instructions for you and your child.

I wanted to share a brief review of our experience with the program here.

Family Music for Mixed Ages

I’ve been going through the “Family Music for Mixed Ages” class (available through musikathome.com) with my two boys (ages 2 and 4) and we all have been loving it!

Our review of an affordable and convenient online series of children's music classes taught by licensed and certified Musikgarten instruction, Kathryn Brunner.

Her new class series (Family Music for Mixed Ages) contains:

  • Six full length 18-22 minute classes that are designed to be repeated 4-8 times each or more
  • 94 musical activities
  • Songs in major and minor tonalities
  • Songs and chants in duple and triple meter (This is just a fancy term for how musicians count rhythm).
  • Pattern echoes that encourage your child to use his or her voice
  • Simple instrument playing for rhythm development, motor skills and coordination
  • Imaginative movement to delightfully orchestrated music
  • Activities that develop impulse control and so much more
  • The option to choose 5 minute or 10 minute classes

Highlights

Each class in the series is made up of several short segments, with some repeating themes.

As soon as I would turn on one of the classes and the theme music began, my boys would come running to the computer, ready to start dancing, clapping, and singing.

Here’s some of their highlights:

  • Dancing around the living room with scarves
  • Clapping to the beat with rhythm sticks
  • “Repeat after me” – they would studiously echo back Kathryn’s musical patterns, and often re-enact their own “repeats” throughout the day, asking me to echo back after them as they came up with absurd strings of sounds – it’s been fun to see them practice what they’re learning during free play :).
  • Becoming familiar with some new songs as they watched the classes over and over again
  • Giggling at (and trying to imitate) the animal sounds and clips of other noises that relate to certain songs

… and some of my highlights:

  • Introducing my children to sophisticated music concepts that I would have never thought to teach them myself
  • Seeing them happily engaged in music
  • Watching them repeat certain activities and songs spontaneously throughout the day
  • Providing them a productive outlet for movement (getting their wiggles out!)
  • Giving them a solid introduction to, and love for, music – without having any kind of musical background myself!

Instruments

You can purchase simple instruments (like the ones pictured above) through Musik at Home so that your kids can play along with the songs and participate in the musical activities … or you can use what you have at home and your kids will still be quiet happy :).

This class is designed for kids ages 1 – 5, but older siblings can enjoy participating and helping out as well. This is a great opportunity to provide children’s music classes for all your kids at once!

More Information

You can find out more here about her program and options for other classes for babies through preschoolers.
