Making Math Fun

As school closures and quarantines roll out across the world, families are looking for ways to keep their kids safe, happy, and educated during this time.

As a former teacher and current homeschooler, I know that it can be overwhelming to suddenly find yourself in a new world of virtual reality and isolation.

I want to help you survive (and even thrive!) while you and your kids navigate new family and educational dynamics.

In an effort to help you help your kids keep learning (and loving!!) Math during this "break," I'm excited to welcome you to join us in a worldwide virtual Math for Fun club, hosted online, with a FREE month-long activity unit.

When you sign up, you will receive one free month-long unit from the complete series of "Math for Fun" activity units.

The online "Math club" portion is hosted on Facebook (Raising Math Superstars); when you sign up you will also receive links to the

  • bonus video lessons
  • Math games, and
  • a participation prize for your kids.

This offer comes with no obligation.

I simply want to help ease the burden of entertaining and educationg your kids while simultaneoulsy trying to figure out childcare, telecommuting for work, losing jobs, staying healthy (!!), and trying to keep everyone happy.

Although we find ourselves increasingly isolated in an uncharted new world, we're all in this together -- and I'd like to help by at least offering a safe, fun place for kids to learn new Math skills in a quarantine-friendly group setting.

Math for Fun club

How does this work?

Daily activities (Bingo style!)

You will get free access to a complete unit of 24 daily activities for kids built around a theme. (This free unit focuses on statistics - the fun kind ;).) Kids will check off activities on their Bingo board as they work their way through activities.

Weekly video lessons

4 video lessons help reinforce the main concepts in this unit; you can watch them on your own schedule and ask questions anytime.

Prizes

Every child who gets at least 5 in a row on their Bingo board earns a participation prize (a fun Math activity :).)

Statistics!

These interactive, hands-on, real world Math activities help students explore statistics in a new and engaging way.

Through daily activity prompts (1-10 minutes each), students will explore

  • bar graphs,
  • picture graphs,
  • pie charts,
  • Venn diagrams,
  • scatterplots,
  • measures of central tendency,
  • correlation,
  • stem and leaf plots,
  • collecting and interpreting data,
  • and much more!

Most activities are open-ended with clear directions to help kids develop number sense and a deep understanding of the concepts.

This is the third in a year-long series of “Math for Fun” units. Each unit provides a month’s worth of daily Math activities designed to expose kids to fun, interactive, beyond-the-textbook Math concepts.

Short tutorial videos help explain several of the concepts, although the unit is designed to be self-explanatory so that it can be used as a stand-alone resource.

What parents are saying

This challenge is so interesting that my son was very excited waiting for the activity everyday. It helps my kids to relate Math to their daily life and makes them understand how they are using certain Math concept in real world as well. As we are homeschooling family, it's more interesting for my son to work on the challenge together with other participants. Thanks for creating this fun challenge!

C. Ka

“I love the real world, just for fun activities Sandra provides. Through these fun activities my son is gaining a strong foundation in, as well as a love for, math! Not to mention that these activities are really fun for us to do together. I look forward to and highly recommend all the content that Sandra puts out!

N. Rivas

Sandra's math challenges are really great! The kids complete each task happily whilst having fun and don't even realise that its part of school!

About the Teacher

Sandra Balisky

Sandra is a former Math teacher (middle school, high school, and online) with a Masters in Teaching, currently homeschooling her 3 kids.

She is the founder of realworldlearners.com, the course creator behind Math-Makes-Sense.Teachable.com, and creates interactive, engaging learning activities for her TPT shop.

She loves leading kids of all ages into the joy of learning, and dreams of the day she can make use of her unusually large stash of yarn and fabric.

These Math for Fun units are designed to be:

1

Fun!

  • To help break down barriers of math anxiety
  • To help students enjoy thinking mathematically
  • To expand students’ view of Math beyond skill and drill worksheets
  • 2

    Fast

  • 1-10 minutes / day
  • 24 activities per unit
  • 3

    Real-World

    • Math that relates to students’ interests
    • Math that can be seen in their environment (indoors, outdoors, in art, etc.)
    4

    Open-Ended

    • Not just worksheets with one right answer
    • Interesting, complex, and open-ended questions give kids a chance to explore topics in unique ways that fit their interests
    5

    Hands-on

Students will interact with Math through hands-on activities, data collection, drawing, modeling, experiments, brief research, conversations, and more!

    6

    Differentiated

Each activity has multiple levels so that students of all ages can participate in these units together.

What ages is this best for?

Every activity has two levels so that kids can participate according to the challenge level that fits their need.

Part A of each activity is more simple, with data provided for kids and straight-forward questions to answer.

Part B of each activity dives a little deeper into the concept, and is often more open-ended. Kids will sometimes collect their own data or look more deeply into the meaning and implication of data they find.

Some of the activities go up through pre-Algebra level, so if you are doing this with a large family, older kids can participate as well or help younger siblings.

In general, though, this will be best for kids about ages 5-10.
