Have you used lapbooks before?

It was love at first sight when I discovered the crisply folded manila file folder, decked out from top to bottom with foldable, colorful graphic organizers, irresistable flaps to lift and booklets to open, and the endless possibilities of hands-on, interactive learning and natural differentiation.

The little teacher in my brain did a happy dance and my lucky, unsuspecting children began several rounds of lapbook drafts as I jumped into the deep end designing my own mini unit study portfolio lapbook thingies :).

This week I am giving away two of my lapbook units for free (to Homeschool Giveaway subscribers only!) for you to use with your own children – hopefully they will enjoy the learning and creating process as much as I did!

The Geoboard Geometry Lapbook

Geoboard Geometry lapbook

I created this lapbook after introducing my son to a Geoboard and watching him play around with it, creating shapes with rubber bands on the pegs. Having recently taught high school Geometry, I realized that this simple tool could be used to teach a large portion of any Geometry curriculum, from Kindergarten through High School.

As he used up an entire box of rubber bands, creating shapes of all sizes and beautifully symmetric designs (I never even thought of using a Geoboard as an artistic canvas before I saw him do that!), I grabbed my journal and starting taking notes on all the things he could learn by using this Math toy (manipulative).

After several iterations and dozens of hours of creative Math (<3!) and graphic designing, I completed a lapbook template with instructions for several hands-on activities and mini-lessons.

This lapbook covers the following concepts:

  • Hands-on geometry activities creating shapes on a geoboard
  • Angles, lines, and intersections
  • Circles (including degrees in a circle)
  • Triangles (categorized by sides and angles)
  • Quadrilaterals (including definitions and diagrams)
  • Flowchart diagrams to show how different types of 3 and 4 sided shapes relate to each other
  • Coordinate Geometry
  • Names of polygons (from 3-10 sides)
  • 0, 1, 2, and 3-d objects (including explanations of each dimension)
  • Flashcards and review activities for vocabulary terms (organized by category)

Each activity in this lapbook is designed with 2 or 3 levels of differentiation so that you can use this with students at any level.

The Parts of Speech Lapbook

Parts of Speech lapbook

This English grammar lapbook is a complete unit study on the parts of speech for kids from Kindergarten to second grade. It includes hands-on activities, graphic organizers, interactive notebook style journaling, task cards, and a Parts of Speech story.

This unit covers most 1st grade standards, but can easily be differentiated for use with students a grade up or down. Younger students can use the pre-filled activities, while older students can use the fill-in-the-blank versions.

As students assemble this lapbook, they will develop a strong understanding of eight parts of speech:

  • Nouns (with plural, possessive, and plural possessive nouns)
  • Verbs (with irregular “to be” verbs)
  • Adjectives
  • Adverbs
  • Pronouns
  • Prepositions
  • Conjunctions
  • Articles
