Your Bright, Wide Eyes

Our third child was born in early September. The newness, innocence, and freshness of an infant never ceases to fill me with awe and a renewed desire to see life again through the eyes of a child.

Here is a short poem I wrote to my daughter in an attempt to capture this appreciation for the limitless wonder of the uncharted life laid out before her, and my thankfulness to share in her journey.

daughter poems - Life Through your Eyes | a poem to my daughter

Your bright, wide eyes are

beautiful

blue portals to the Innocence

of brand-new life.

I watch you

watch a world

where everything is new,

In awe of your ability

to learn a million things within a few short months.

Your watchful gaze,

intense and pure,

absorbs life —

the sights, the sounds,

the taste of everything!

You look like you’re considering

who we are –

completely trusting us to be

companions in your journey.

Your tiny fingers,

quite beyond your control,

begin interacting

bravely, on your behalf,

with this space you suddenly exist in.

Your little, flapping arms

and kicky feet

diligently imitate

your older brothers

who spend hours imitating you.

Your bright, wide eyes

reflect the love

and safety

and simplicity

of this small world – your home.

I’m thankful for the opportunity

to be your mother,

the one to introduce you to

our people and our places,

and as we explore together,

to see it all through your sweet, light eyes.
