Welcome!
Welcome to R.E.A.L.-World Learners!
This is a condensed version of my normal series of emails that I send out to new subscribers. I’ve made this as concise as possible and included a sample of some of the best content (with a FREE PRINTABLE from each category!) to give you an idea of the resources you’ll find here.
Brief Intro
I’ll start with the Who/What/When/Where/Why of R.E.A.L.-World Learners, then share content and freebies from each category of content that you’ll find here.
Welcome to our learning community!
This website is a collection of stories about our adventures with child-led learning and resources that I create for my own children that I’d love to share with other families (homeschooling or otherwise). (For more detail, you can read my thoughts on teaching and learning and my About Me page.)
I chose the acronym R.E.A.L. to stand for
- Relevant,
- Engaging,
- Authentic, and
- Lifelong;
I believe that everything we teach our children should fall into these categories.
When children are intrinsically motivated to learn, they will master skills, build masterpieces, retain and build upon knowledge, and enthusiastically pursue learning opportunities.
Who?
- Who am I? I am a teacher/homeschooler with a double-major in Math and English and a Masters in Teaching. I taught Math in 5 different school districts (including middle school, high school, and an online school). I am now homeschooling my own children and am thankful for the daily opportunities to see life in a fresh way through the eyes of my children and to help cultivate in them a love for learning.
- Who will benefit from my content? If your children are in public, private, charter, or homeschool, or if you don’t have children but you are a teacher or tutor and you are looking for ideas, inspiration, resources, teaching help, or learning materials in the following categories, you will probably benefit from this content:
- Pre-K – 3rd grade content
- Math (a lot of this!)
- Coding
- Reading
- Writing
- Science
- Arts and Crafts
- General educational games and ideas for learning through play
- Algebra 1 and Geometry
- I’m re-creating the best of my projects and hands-on activities that I made for my students when I was teaching. These have been some of my most popular products to date, and can be used in schools or at home.
- … and my resource base of free printables, hands-on learning ideas, and full activity-based lesson packs will grow as we do, so stick around or check back later if this doesn’t meet your needs at the moment.
What?
What can you expect out of this relationship?
In my newsletter, you’ll find:
- Links to recent posts
- Free printables to help make learning Relevant, Engaging, Authentic, and Lifelong 😊
- Ideas for low-prep learning activities
- Quotes from inspiring books that I’m reading about education
- The occasional snippet from my book I’m writing about my experiences teaching Math (possible title: Why Do I need to Teach This??)
- Occasional information about resources and products that I’ve found valuable as a homeschool mom
When? Where?
You’ll receive an email from me 2-4* times a month (*or occasionally a few more if I’m in an especially productive season of life) .
Why?
Why did I start R.E.A.L.-World Learners? I am passionate about creating and curating hands-on, discovery-based, real-world learning activities that build on a child’s natural curiosity, draws out their unique strengths, and develops in them a life-long love of learning.
Math
Most of my blog and products are focused on Math and finding ways to help kids enjoy, understand, and feel confident in their own ability to do Math.
Blog Post
This blog post explains a series of Math games that I created:
Free Printable
Here is the first game in the series – this is a direct download of the 10 page pdf file for the single-digit Addition game set.
Recommended Product
You can see the complete bundle set in my store. I will be updating this entire series soon to add in an additional, larger board game to each level with more Math, Movement, and Trivia cards. (At that point the price will increase, but if you purchase now, you’ll get the updated version free.)
My Favorite Math curriculum
Are you looking for a Math curriculum that will help your kids understand and enjoy Math? We use RightStart Mathematics – it is by far the most complete deep learning curriculum that I’ve seen. These guided lessons are built around hands-on, interactive, exploratory activities and are strategically designed to help kids understand how Math works and love the learning process. We love using it and I can’t recommend it highly enough! (You can check out their website directly by clicking on the image below.)
Creative Writing
Since I double majored in Math and English (creative writing), I wanted to introduce a love of literature and writing as well as a strong emphasis on Math into my own homeschool and this blog.
Blog posts
I wrote a 5-post blog series about ways to help your children have fun with the creative writing process. You can read one of the posts here. (It includes links to the others.)
Free Printable
This is the set of story writing prompts and templates that I mention throughout the series. There is a direct download link in the article mentioned above.
Recommended Products
If you are looking for more writing related products, you may be interested in these printables from my store:
- 1st grade Parts of Speech Lapbook (adaptable for K-2)
- Inventors and Inventions Unit Study (with reports)
Coding for Kids
I’ve heard coding referred to as the “literacy of the 21st century” and I believe that it is a very essential skill to teach our kids.
Blog Posts
We’ve discovered a whole world of opportunities for kids to learn coding – through books, websites, games, apps, and community events. This blog post is one in a series about both online and offline coding programs for kids.
Free Printable
I’ve created a few offline coding activities for kids ages 5-12. Here is a sample of a Pixel art set that helps kids learn about and practice skills related to coding, pre-Algebra, and photography. (That is a direct link to an 8 page pdf file.)
Recommended Product
If you are looking for a unique, interactive, fun activity that will help kids learn several fundamentals of coding, you may want to check out this game: Choreograph a Robot Dance.
Algebra and Geometry
I taught middle and high school Math for 6 years (mostly Algebra and Geometry) and am now working back through my files of Project Based Learning activities and my favorite interactive resources from my classroom days (lol – I think the students enjoyed them too 😉 ), turning them into products that other teachers, tutors, and homeschoolers can use.
Recommended Products
At this time, I don’t have a free sample of any of my higher level Math products, but I do want to share with you a project that I had a lot of fun using with my own students – this Marketing Plan has been my best seller for a year and half!
You can see my other Algebra and Geometry specific products here.
And more …
I also write about homeschooling, parenting, newborns, and crafts with kids … but I’ll leave you to explore the blog if that sounds interesting (so that I don’t completely overwhelm you with this page!).
Thanks for being here! From now on out, you can expect to hear from me about 2-4 times a month (or more often on the rare occasion that I have significantly more to share with you) – and I’ll include a free printable or learning resource in every email!
Have a wonderful day!
Sandra
